Volcano Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Triggers Emergency Relocations

Indonesia's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on Java island, has erupted, covering several villages with falling ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the warning to the highest level.

The volcano in the province of East Java released searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 7km down its sides multiple times from midday to dusk, while a dense plume of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The outbursts that occurred throughout the day compelled authorities to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the top level, the authority reported. No casualties have been reported.

Over three hundred residents in the three communities most at risk in the district of Lumajang were evacuated to government shelters, according to a spokesperson for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He stated that increased activity of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday led authorities to widen the danger zone to 8km from the summit. People were advised to keep away from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as searing gas flowed down the volcano's sides.

Footage on social media displayed a dense cloud of volcanic dust sweeping through a forested valley to a river beneath a overpass. Locals, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, fled to makeshift refuges or left for alternative secure locations.

Local media indicated that emergency teams were struggling to rescue about 178 people trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The party comprised 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven guides and six travel representatives, according to an official with the national park.

“They remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” an official stated in a video statement. He noted the post was situated 4.5km from the crater on the northern slope of the volcano, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was seen moving to the southeast direction. Inclement conditions and rain forced the team to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of residents still to reside on its fertile slopes.

Semeru’s last major eruption was in December 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and several hundred others were injured and villages were buried in layers of mud. The event forced the evacuation of over ten thousand people from their houses.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 280 million inhabitants, is located along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of fault lines, and is susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
