With an announcement that combines financial support with a clear warning, Washington has vowed $2 billion for UN humanitarian programmes. Yet, this funding came with a blunt message for the global organization: it must "evolve or perish."

A Major Announcement During Wider Funding Cuts

This commitment was made amid significant cuts in US support of humanitarian operations. Further cuts are also anticipated from other major contributors including the UK and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the statement alongside the United Nations' top humanitarian official.

"This money will save millions of lives," stated the UN's relief coordinator. However, this amount constitutes only a fraction of the United States' historical contributions, which previously totaled around $17 billion just a few years ago.

Funding with Specific Conditions

The latest American assistance comes with unconditional. The money is focused on just 17 nations, such as Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Notably, Yemen and Afghanistan are explicitly excluded.
