This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
