Trumpism's most telling and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.

That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months.
