No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
