Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
