Catherine's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will hear a blend of carols, music and readings from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The central message of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a message before the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
