American Military Executes Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
According to a high-ranking military spokesperson, the US armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
